SUPPORTING YOUR CUSTOMERS’ FINANCIAL wellbeing

Mission: Po$$ible

I wrote Mission: Possible knowing (from years of advising individuals and institutions, and time spent overseas) that Australia has arguably the best set-up in the world to enable personal finance, and yet so many are left confused, struggling and overwhelmed. This is a shocking outcome for individuals as well as the broader community, and COVID has only exacerbated the situation.

Mission: Possible attempts to help turn the situation around by providing clear, prudent and positive guidance in a very easy to read (and even fun) format.

However, a challenge with personal finance books is that often those who need them the most don’t end up accessing them. For many, covering the cost of the book is too much. We musn’t let this be a hurdle.

To that end, I have engaged several financial institutions that are genuinely focused on supporting their customers’ financial welfare to find a solution.

This engagement has led to thoughtful conversations about building financial literacy and getting the book to those who really need it, whilst minimising the frictions for the institutions.

Gifting books may seem novel, but there is a long tradition of industries gifting thoughtful, helpful books to fellow industry people. It’s a great practice – books cost a few dollars yet can be life-changing, but I have always thought, ‘What about books for customers?!’

Gifting a book to customers who need support makes sense: If a customer commits to the admirable task of getting their finances sorted and all the heavy lifting that comes with that, it makes sense for an institution to support their effort. Doing so is typically aligned with an institution’s governing purpose as well as objectives of different sub-areas, including customer education, customer advocacy, and corporate responsibility.
